The short version
- Your position is shared only with the squad you choose for the day, only while you are recording, and never in ghost mode.
- Friends see your stats and runs. Only you see the track you skied.
- There are no ads and no analytics companies, and nothing is sold.
- Deleting your account deletes your data.
What SkiSquad is
SkiSquad is a ski tracker for groups of friends. It runs on one server of its own, in Oracle Cloud’s Frankfurt region in Germany. Anyone can sign up in the app; what you share goes only to the squads you create or join.
What the app records
- Your account: the name you choose, your email address, and the squads you are in.
- Your ski days, while you record: your positions with their speed and altitude, and what the phone works out from them (runs, lift rides, distance, vertical, top speed).
- Your live position while you record, with your phone’s battery level, so your squad can see you on the map.
- How the app is working: the kind of phone and app version, when the app was opened, how long it stayed open, whether uploads worked, and how much battery a recording used. This is how problems get noticed and fixed.
- For notifications: a code that lets the server send notifications to your phone.
The app uses your location only to show you on the map and to record the days you start. When you aren’t recording, the map just asks the server which resort is near you, with your position rounded off. That isn’t stored, and nobody sees it.
Who can see what
- Your squad (the one you chose when you pressed Start) sees where you are while you record, unless you are in ghost mode. The server enforces this, not just the app.
- Members of that squad can see the day’s stats, runs and lift rides, and you on its leaderboards. They don’t see your track on the map: only you do.
- A day recorded for “nobody” is seen by nobody else, and counts on no leaderboard.
- Safety alerts (low battery, or not moving for a long time) go to your squad only if you switched “Share my safety alerts” on.
- The person who runs SkiSquad can see accounts, ski days and tracks, and who is recording right now, in order to run the service and help when something goes wrong.
Other services involved
- Firebase Authentication (Google) handles signing in, with Google, Apple or an email address and password. It knows your email address and sends the emails that confirm it or reset your password.
- Expo’s push service, with Apple and Google, delivers the notifications. It gets the notification’s text and the code for your phone.
- A map service serves the background map, so like any map service it sees which area your phone is showing. The ski runs and lifts come from SkiSquad’s own server.
No advertising or analytics companies are involved, and your data isn’t sold or shared with anyone else.
How long it is kept
- Your live position is deleted 24 hours after its last update.
- Your raw positions are deleted after 90 days. The day’s stats, its runs and a simplified track stay until you delete the day or your account.
- The information about how the app is working is deleted after 400 days.
- The code for notifications is forgotten when you sign out on that phone.
- The server keeps a backup of its database every day, for 14 days on the server and 30 days in separate storage. Something you delete can stay in a backup until that backup is deleted.
Deleting your data
- One ski day: open the day and choose “Delete this day”. Its track, runs and stats are deleted, on the phone and on the server.
- Everything: Settings → “Delete account” deletes your account, your ski days and everything else about you, and your sign-in at Firebase. Squads you own pass to the member who joined first.
Security
The app and the server only talk over encrypted connections (HTTPS), the database can’t be reached from the internet, and every request is checked against who you are and which squads you are in.
